The Kano State Police Command has banned all Durbar activities throughout the state ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities due to the ongoing crisis stemming from the recent repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019. This legislative change led to the dethronement of five emirs installed in 2020 by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje and reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, replacing Ado Bayero.
The ban was announced in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Abdullahi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel. This measure aims to prevent a potential clash between supporters of the two claimants to the throne, Sanusi and Bayero, during the Sallah festivities.
Despite Bayero’s assurance of police protection for a planned Durbar at his Gidan Nassarawa palace, the police denied receiving any such notification. Consequently, to maintain public order, all Durbar activities have been canceled. The police have urged worshippers to conduct their Eid prayers at designated praying grounds and assured that security measures are in place to prevent any disruption during the festive period.
In related legal developments, Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano has confirmed the court’s jurisdiction to hear Bayero’s case against his dethronement and the reinstatement of Sanusi. The court has maintained a status quo ante order, suspending the implementation of the new emirate council law pending further hearings.
Additionally, Sheikh Muhammad Niasse, the Global Leader of the Tijjaniyya Islamic Group, has denied the authenticity of a circulating letter purportedly appealing to Sanusi to step down, labeling it a forgery. The group has threatened legal action against those behind the fraudulent letter.
