The Nigerian military has again assured Nigerians of its readiness to guarantee a peaceful transition of government on May 29 2023. Military authorities raised hope of a peaceful handover of power to the president-elect on May29, (Democracy Day) amidst anxiety that the transition to the new administration of the President-elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu may be scuttled. But fielding questions by newsmen during the Defence Headquarters bi-weekly briefing on Nigerian troops’ activities and operational successes recorded in the various theatres of operation across the country, in Abuja yesterday, the Director of the Defence Media Operation (DMO), Major General Musa Danmadami declared that the military would ensure that nobody derails the transition programme of May 29. He reiterated that the police is the lead security agency to ensure that peace reigns, but that the military is on stand-by always to support to give Nigerians peace and hitch-free handover. Danmadami also used the occasion to reaffirm military’s commitment to a peaceful country saying there is no cause for alarm over May 29 official inauguration of a new government. Hear him: “Elections have come and gone. For the presidential election, a winner has been announced. There is a transition committee in place comprising all members of the security agencies, ministries and agencies of government to make sure the event is held successfully and without a glitch.” He continues: We don’t see reasons why there should be a problem during the exercise. The inauguration will come and go and nothing will happen. We are not going to relent at ensuring there is peace and stability across the length and breadth of the country”.
He also warned anti-May 29 handover sentiment to desist from circulating the rumour.
Earlier, he disclosed that troops sustained their resilience against terrorists in the North East, adding that the gallant troops inflicted casualties on terrorists in clearance operations leading to huge successes.
