The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is set to commence the sale of seized bags of rice to the public at a highly discounted rate of N10,000 per 25kg. Revealing this development in Lagos, the Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, outlined the meticulous process for purchasing these food items.
To streamline the purchase process, applicants are required to submit a form containing their details, including the National Identification Number (NIN). A bar code will then be generated for the collection of the commodity. Ten registration points will be opened to the public, aiming to facilitate a smoother purchasing experience.
The primary objective of selling the seized items is to drive down the price of food items and strengthen the value of the Naira, according to the Customs boss. He cautioned against the resale of the purchased rice, emphasizing that individuals caught engaging in such activities would face arrest and potential prosecution.
The initiative is targeted at very poor Nigerians, with the intention of addressing food security challenges. The Customs boss highlighted that the disposal of seized items would occur over a specific period, and stringent measures have been implemented to ensure the security and integrity of the initiative.
Beneficiaries must have a verifiable NIN, and the target groups include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other individuals within the NCS operational areas. The NCS emphasized its commitment to transparency, accountability, and preventing any misuse or diversion of the food items throughout the entire supply chain.
In a related development, the NCS leadership expressed concerns about the outflow of food items to neighboring countries, affecting Nigeria’s food security. To address this, the NCS remains dedicated to its mandate of protecting borders and ensuring the sufficiency of food items internally. The agency vows to uphold transparency and accountability in executing its duties to safeguard national interests.
