The wife of the Acting-President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo has challenged women in the country to be in the forefront against drug abuse, hunger, rape and other vices that hinder the growth of Children.
Mrs Osinbajo also urged women to champion the course against female genital mutilation, child labour and girl-child-out of school syndrome which has been helping to retard the uplifting of the female in education the sector.
Speaking in Owerri during the Imo Women 2018 August summit, the wife of the acting-President said that with the theme ‘Sharing Our Common Cultural Values’, was apt because culture has a way of affecting the lives of the people.
Mrs Osinbajo said that the society is derailing because parents especially women have abandoned the culture which the people have been known for and which has been their guiding principles for years.
She said, “Our system is going backwards because we have abandoned our culture, so this year’s August meeting with the theme is a wake-up call for women in our society to and up against those things that are against our favorable culture”.
“Women should brace-up and play the expected role especially in the area of fighting the vices that hamper or have the tendencies of hampering the development or growth of the Child and by implication, our society”.
She continued, “The theme of this Year’s August Meeting is apt as every culture has a way of affecting the lives of the particular society in which they are found and have always been a stabilizing factor”.
“When this culture is neglected, the society is derailed or suffer for it, so all hands must be on deck to champion the fight against these vices that pose threat to our culture, the society, children, women and so on”.
Earlier in her welcome address the wife of the Imo Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha urged women in the country to close ranks to enable them achieve collective goals.
Mrs Okorocha maintained that women should avoid dangerous routes like laziness, gossiping insubordination, antagonism and rancour to achieve these goals since the success of one Igbo woman or any other woman is the collective success of all women.
She said, “With determination God’s grace and unity of purpose, we closed routes that diminished our collective conscience and goals if we are to move forward to the next level”.
“Indeed we have rekindled the light of positivism and togetherness and by so doing have removed in the State the primordial barriers of zonal sentimentalism, creed, social status and others that do no one any good”.
She continued, “In the quest for the promotion of our cultural values and norms, I expanded the scope of our annual August Meeting, from year to year, since the inception of the Rescue Mission Government, I, with divine inspiration chose the themes of our August Meetings”.
“In 2011, it was Women: the Home Builders, in 2012 Women: Vessels for Transformation, 2013 August Meeting had Managing Stress and Unity of Purpose as its theme, in 2014, it was Imo Women: Making a Difference through Involvement and Commitment”.
“In 2015 it was Women: Dare to Dream, 2016 was Looking at the Next Generation of Mothers, in 2017 it was Women: Building Bridges of Friendship across the Niger and today 2018, my Valedictory August Meeting, the grand finale, the theme is *“Sharing our Common Cultural Values”.
She said, “At this point, I want to encourage all Imo women to take advantage of the free education policy of His Excellency because no nation ever rises above the education of its people”.
“There is therefore the need for us all, to jealously safeguard the ideals of free education which will definitely improve the lives of our children; the leaders of tomorrow”.
Present at the event include, Governor Rochas Okorocha, Her Excellencies, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu (Abia), Dame Edith Okowa (Delta), Dr. (Mrs) Linda Ayade (Cross River), Mrs. Glory Ajimobi (Oyo), Mrs. Betsy Obaseki (Edo), Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi (Enugu), among others.
