The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced a significant response to its recently launched student loan application portal, with over 60,000 applications received from students attending federal government institutions. Out of these, 30,000 applications have been successfully processed, marking a milestone in the initiative aimed at providing financial support to Nigerian students.

Joseph Erunke reports from Abuja that NELFUND has indicated substantial progress, with 90 percent of federal universities having submitted their students’ data to the agency’s dashboard. However, 10 percent of these institutions are yet to comply, which NELFUND is urging them to do promptly.

In a recent update, NELFUND also disclosed that the application portal for students from state-owned tertiary institutions will open in three weeks. The agency is calling on these state institutions to begin submitting their students’ data in preparation for the application process.

This development has garnered mixed reactions from the public, particularly in light of the recent suspension of the student loan program. Some have expressed skepticism, echoing sentiments that “Nigerians never expect anything” from such initiatives, while others remain hopeful about the potential benefits for students.

Amidst this, NELFUND continues to appeal to state institutions to expedite the submission of student data to ensure a smooth and timely processing of loan applications once the portal opens. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational opportunities and support for students across Nigeria.
