Sokoto State government has on Wednesday inaugurated a road safety advisory council in line with the Federal government policy on the successful implementation of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy Blueprint (NRSS II) 2021-2030.
Speaking while inaugurating the council, the state Deputy Governor, Manir Mohammed Dan’Iya, described the NRSS II as a compendium derived over the years for the purpose of road safety management in Nigeria in reaction to the increasing incidence of road traffic crashes bring recorded on daily basis.
Dan’Iya, who is also the state chairman of the advisoy council members further disclosed that the working document of the council is set up in line with global best practice on road safety management.
He said it will highlight the key milestones in road safety globally, depict the current road safety situation across the globe as well as articulate the desired road safety situation globally.
Earlier in his remarks, the sector commander of the Sokoto State command of the federal safety corps said the state road safety advisory council is an extension of the National advisory road safety council derived from the first Global ministerial conference on safety held in 2009.
He said the aim of the council is
to address the challenges of the Road safety in the country in line with the United Nations agenda to reduce road accident related deaths.
Members of the council as inaugurated includes the state deputy governor, Manir Mohammed Dan’Iya who is the chairman, while the Director of Admin, State specialist hospital will serve as the secretary.
Other members includes Commissioners for Works and Transport, Health, Justice, Education, Finance, Environment as well as that of Budget and Economic planning.
It also includes the sector commander of the federal road safety corps and representative of Nigeria Society of Engineers.
