Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Wednesday presented a N758.7 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the Sokoto State House of Assembly, with heavy spending on security, health, education and infrastructure.
Tagged the “Budget of Socio-Economic Expansion,” the proposal allocates 72 per cent to capital expenditure and 28 per cent to recurrent spending, in line with global fiscal best practices.
Speaking during the presentation, the governor said the budget was drafted after extensive public consultations, including town hall meetings held across the three senatorial districts of Tambuwal, Tangaza and Gwadabawa, where citizens from all 23 local government areas and 244 wards made direct inputs.
According to him, the total budget size stands at N758,700,526,537.89, with projected revenue comprising N389.3 billion from FAAC, N74.5 billion as internally generated revenue, and N233.8 billion from capital receipts, grants and development funds.
On the expenditure side, N551.4 billion is earmarked for capital projects, while N207.2 billion will cover recurrent expenses, including personnel and overhead costs.
The security sector received one of the highest allocations, with over N45.2 billion proposed for the procurement of equipment, patrol vehicles, motorcycles and other logistics to support security agencies in tackling banditry and violent crimes.
In the health sector, the government proposed N122.7 billion, representing about 16 per cent of the total budget, exceeding the Abuja Declaration benchmark of 15 per cent. Planned projects include the completion of the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital, Murtala Muhammad Hospital and premier hospitals in Binji, Tambuwal and Sabon Birni, as well as the procurement of ambulances and medical equipment.
Education is allocated N115.9 billion, in line with UNESCO’s recommended funding threshold, while N109.1 billion is proposed for works and transportation, covering road construction, rehabilitation and public transport support.
Other key allocations include N41.1 billion for water resources, N18.7 billion for agriculture, N17.4 billion for religious affairs, and N33.9 billion for humanitarian services, poverty reduction and youth empowerment programmes.
The governor assured lawmakers that the budget was designed to reflect citizens’ priorities and stimulate economic growth, noting that the economic sector received the highest share at 41 per cent, followed by the social sector at 37 per cent.
He further disclosed that the state remains debt-free, stressing that the 2026 budget would be implemented without borrowing and without accumulating contractor liabilities.
The House of Assembly is expected to begin legislative scrutiny of the proposal immediately.
