There is tension in Amangwu and Okon Aku communities in Ohafia clan, Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia state following the invasion of the communities by soldiers of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, who are said to be searching for their missed colleague in the area.

The soldiers reportedly killed scores of people and burnt 50 houses during an early morning raid on the two communities.

The invasion of the communities was the result of an alleged kidnap of a yet to be identified soldier who was passing through the boundary between Amuma and Amangwu communities.

The situation has caused panic in Ohafia as residents of Amangwu, Amuma and Okon Aku communities have fled their homes seeking refuge in primary schools, churches and village halls in some yet to be attacked communities such as Asaga, Amaekpu and Ebem.

During the raid, soldiers allegedly broke into houses and arrested youths, many of whom have not been seen since their arrest.

The situation has developed into a sprawling Internally Displaced Persons camp in the communities.

According to residents of Amangwu who declined to have their names on print;’ “We were woken out of sleep by sound of gunfire. We didn’t know what was happening, but it is was around 5.30am. And by that hour, many houses had been broken into and youths arrested. The soldiers were burning houses. Many people escaped through the bush parts because the soldiers had cordoned off all the roads leading to the community. My house was burnt, not even a pin was rescued. I operate a poultry farm in my compound, I can’t tell the condition of the chicken, they would have all died by now. The soldiers said they are looking for IPOB/ESN people, why not identify the suspects and arrest them instead of killing innocent people?”

Another resident of Okon Aku, Kalu Matthew confirmed that the soldiers have burnt over 6 buildings in the community after they took away 10 youths.

Army Public Relations Officer,Lieutenant Innocent Omale, has not responded to inquiries on the situation. However a  military source hinted that there is an ongoing military operation at the communities in search of the missing soldier

“There is an ongoing operation in search of the missing soldier in Amangwu area. We are fishing out the criminals for peace to reign. The Army is here to fight insecurity,we are not arrestee innocent persons,” the military source said.
