President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving transportation in Nigeria, promising to address the needs of citizens in this critical sector. Speaking during the inauguration of 30 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses donated by the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) on Monday in Abuja, Tinubu described the initiative as a significant step towards revolutionizing the nation’s transportation system.

“It brings me great joy to receive these buses on behalf of the government, as they represent a significant innovation in our transportation system. The future of our transportation industry lies in utilizing natural gas, and embracing CNG vehicles is not just a sustainable choice but an economic necessity,” President Tinubu remarked.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians regarding transportation and praised INNOSON Motors and other key players for their efforts in transforming the industry. Tinubu emphasized the economic advantages of adopting CNG-powered vehicles, noting that Nigeria could learn from countries like India, where CNG has been mandated for commercial vehicles since 2004.

“Commercial vehicles account for about 80 percent of our petrol consumption, costing the country trillions of Naira each month. The solution is here, and we will work on it. We promise you that things will improve, and prosperity will be achieved,” Tinubu assured the public.

Mrs. Winifred Akpani, Chairman of DAPPMAN, explained that the hybrid buses, designed and manufactured by INNOSON Motors—a Nigerian company based in Nnewi—can operate on both CNG and diesel, accommodating up to 100 passengers per bus. This flexibility makes them a valuable asset to the country’s transportation infrastructure.

“These hybrid buses, which can run on CNG, are capable of transporting 100 people each and can also switch to diesel when necessary,” Akpani stated. She added that DAPPMAN has arranged for the training of drivers to ensure the proper handling and maintenance of these buses, enhancing their durability and efficiency.

DAPPMAN’s contribution is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs, which could lead to lower prices for goods and services, benefiting the broader economy. Akpani reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at alleviating transportation challenges across Nigeria.

“We are confident that this initiative will help reduce transportation costs, and as a result, food prices and other essentials will become more affordable,” Akpani concluded.
