The annual hajj pilgrimage, meant to be a spiritually uplifting journey, has turned tragic for over a thousand pilgrims this year, with a significant number of fatalities attributed to unregistered participants who faced extreme hardships and a lack of essential amenities.

Yasser’s Heartbreaking Search Yasser, a 60-year-old retired engineer from Egypt, is among those grappling with the harsh realities of this year’s pilgrimage. After years of being unable to secure a hajj visa, he resorted to performing the pilgrimage illegally. Now, he fears his wife may be among the more than 1,000 fatalities reported, mostly unregistered Egyptians like himself. “I have searched every single hospital in Mecca. She’s not there,” Yasser said, his voice filled with despair.

The Scope of the Tragedy Egypt accounts for more than half of this year’s hajj fatalities, with 658 Egyptian pilgrims among the dead, 630 of whom were unregistered. These unregistered pilgrims were particularly vulnerable, lacking access to the air-conditioned tents and official transportation that offer some respite from the blistering heat, which reached up to 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 Fahrenheit) at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

A Deadly Journey The extreme conditions and lack of access to essential services led to many pilgrims succumbing to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Mohammed, a 31-year-old Egyptian living in Saudi Arabia, witnessed the dire situation firsthand. “There were dead bodies on the ground in Arafat, Mina, and on the way to Mecca,” he recounted. “I saw people suddenly collapse and die from exhaustion.”

System Overwhelmed Despite Saudi Arabia’s preparations, the influx of unregistered pilgrims overwhelmed the system. Mustafa, whose elderly parents had hajj permits but still faced difficulties, noted that emergency services were often inadequate. His parents both died after being separated from younger relatives, unable to cope with the long distances and extreme heat. “We knew they were tired. They were walking very long distances and couldn’t find water, and it was so hot,” he said.

Authorities’ Response In the first official comment on the deaths, a senior Saudi official acknowledged the tragedy but attributed the fatalities to a misjudgment by individuals who did not appreciate the risks. “The state did not fail. But there was a misjudgment on the part of people who did not appreciate the risks,” the official said.

A Grim Reality for Families For Yasser and many others, the pilgrimage has turned into a nightmare. He continues to hold onto hope that his wife will return. “I will keep postponing it until I find her,” he said. Other families, like that of a woman in Riyadh who lost her mother during the pilgrimage, are still searching for their loved ones’ bodies. “Don’t we have the right to get a last look at her before she is buried?” she asked, reflecting the anguish of many families affected by the tragedy.

A Nation in Mourning The sorrow extends beyond individual families. “Of course, we believe in what God has written for them. But all of Egypt is sad,” Mustafa said, mourning the loss of his parents. The shared grief underscores the need for better management and support systems to ensure the safety and well-being of all pilgrims, regardless of their registration status.

The hajj, a pillar of Islam, is meant to be a profound spiritual journey. However, for many this year, it has been a journey marked by grief and loss, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures and better support for all pilgrims.
