Mr. Kabir Nadabo, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna State Sector Commander, has confirmed a devastating road crash on the Zaria-Kano Expressway. The incident occurred at Tashar Yari village, claiming the lives of 12 individuals and leaving 28 with injuries.
Nadabo revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that the fatal accident transpired around 7:36 am when a trailer with the registration number KTG 454 ZZ was en route to Kano. The primary causes identified were wrongful overtaking, speeding, and overloading, resulting in a tragic loss of lives.
Local authorities, including the Chairman of Makarfi Local Government and the Unit Commander at Tashar Yari, were promptly on the scene to assess the situation. An investigation disclosed that 40 individuals were involved, with 28 sustaining injuries and 12 fatalities.
“The injured were conveyed to the Makarfi General Hospital for further treatment. The owner of the vehicle, located in Azare, Bauchi State, has been informed and directed to report to the Kaduna Sector Command. Regrettably, the driver of the trailer was reportedly among the deceased,” stated Nadabo.
Highlighting the preventable nature of the accident, Nadabo emphasized the FRSC’s commitment to engaging stakeholders, especially transport unions. The aim is to educate drivers on the perils of speeding, overloading, reckless driving, and the use of cellphones while driving.
He appealed to motorists to prioritize safe driving practices, particularly on highways, and pledged the FRSC’s continued efforts to collaborate with transport stakeholders and the media in promoting road safety awareness.
