Emotions ran high in Sokoto on Satiurday as journalists, dignitaries and family members gathered to honour late media icon, Sirajo Dalhatu Sifawa, at a memorial programme organised by the Sokoto Professional Network (SPN).
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Usman Binji, praised SPN for staging what he described as a “timely and meaningful” tribute to a man he called “a complete media professional.”
“Sifawa dedicated his life to the ideals of true journalism. His legacy should serve as a guide to all practising journalists in the state,” Binji said.
“We must always remember that death is inevitable and strive to leave behind worthy legacies.”
Also speaking, Managing Director of Rima Television, Alhaji Labaran Lumu Dundaye—represented by Shehu Garba—described the late broadcaster as “a complete gentleman whose impact will not be forgotten.”
“This is a befitting event to immortalise a man who gave so much to the profession,” he noted.
The event featured the unveiling of a media gallery in Sifawa’s honour, with several speakers, including Yusuf Dingyadi, Faruk Malami Yabo and Kabiru Asada, paying glowing tributes to his life and career.
In an emotional moment, Sifawa’s daughter, speaking on behalf of the family, struggled to hold back tears as she thanked the organisers.
“The sudden death of our father was shocking and deeply saddening,” she said.
“We appreciate SPN for celebrating his life and urge media practitioners to continue to honour his legacy.”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, described Sifawa’s passing as “a painful loss to the state.” Represented by the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi, the monarch urged journalists to remain steadfast.
“You must continue to be the voice of the voiceless in society,” he charged.
He also commended SPN leadership under Engineer Zayyanu Yabo for recognising the late journalist’s contributions.
“He mentored many upcoming journalists. Supporting his family is a collective responsibility,” he added.
Earlier, SPN Chairman, Engineer Zayyanu Yabo, announced that the association had opened a special fund to support the education and welfare of Sifawa’s children.
“We call on organisations, including NUJ, to contribute their quota in supporting the family he left behind,” Yabo said.
Sifawa, until his death, was a media consultant to SPN, a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and a veteran staff of Rima Television with over three decades of experience in journalism.
His passing, speakers agreed, leaves a significant void in Sokoto’s media landscape.
