Chaos ensued at the national headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Thursday as suspected thugs disrupted a peaceful protest by members of the North Central APC. The protesters had gathered to demand the resignation of the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and the restoration of the party leadership seat to the North Central region.
The demonstrators, carrying banners and chanting slogans, appealed for support from President Bola Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to rectify what they termed an unfair allocation of party positions. However, their protest was abruptly interrupted when hoodlums attacked them, wielding sticks and dispersing the crowd.
In the aftermath of the assault, Plateau State Coordinator of the North Central APC Stakeholders, Hamisu Suleiman, expressed dismay at the violence, vowing to continue their quest for justice. He emphasized that the North Central deserved fair representation within the party leadership, urging stakeholders to intervene and rectify the situation.
Similarly, Sani Jigas, Nasarawa State chairman of North Central Forum, urged regional governors to advocate for their cause during an upcoming stakeholders meeting. Despite the intimidation, the protesters remained resolute, affirming their commitment to seeking redress for what they perceive as an injustice.
In response, the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, clarified that recent party decisions had re-zoned national offices, including the chairmanship, to different regions. He cautioned against arbitrary demands for resignations, urging adherence to the party’s constitutional processes for addressing grievances.
As tensions persist, the incident underscores underlying tensions within the APC and the imperative for transparent and inclusive party governance.
