Yobe State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, wishes to inform the publics, that the Deputy Controller of Corrections, in-charge of  non-custodial services in the state, DCC Ali Abubakar, has been promoted to the rank of Controller of Corrections.

He is among the 37 new Controllers of Corrections, which their promotion was announced following the release of the 2019  Promotion Exercise for Officers  on the rank of Deputy Controller to Controller, conducted by Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board.

Ali Abubakar had his primary education from 1971 to 1978 at Central Primary School, Gombe. He proceeded to Government Secondary School, Kumo, Akko LGA, Gombe State, where he had his secondary education from 1978 to 1983.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Geography from the prestigious University of Maiduguri, Borno State. He was appointed into the then Nigerian Prisons Service in August, 1990 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP1).

As a seasoned Correctional Officer who has served the Nigerian Correctional Service in different capacities, has attended several professional courses, they include,

  • ASP Basic Course (now ASC Basic Course), at Correctional Training School, Enugu in 1991
  • CSP Development Course (now CSC Development Course), at Correctional Staff College, Kaduna
  • Command Course at Correctional Academy, Ijebu-igbo, Ogun State

Some of his  postings include:

  • Acting Officer Incharge, Numan Custodial Centre, Adamawa State
  • Acting Officer Incharge, Gombe Custodial Centre, Gombe State
  • Officer Incharge, Guyuk Satellite Facility, Adamawa State
  • Officer Incharge, New Custodial Centre, Maiduguri, Borno State

Speaking on the idea behind the policy of Non-custodial Sentencing, Mr Abubakar said, it is a step in the right direction for Nigerian Correctional Service, because it will reduce congestion in custodial centres, as it is obtained in the developed countries. He added that no offender should be put behind bars to serve sentence.
