A human rights lawyer and one of the aides to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, Dr Anthony Agbazuere has called on other contestants for the governorship seat to step down for the incumbent for equity to prevail in the state.
Agbazuere said that those who intend to contest with the governor should reconsider their position by having a rethink as equity and performance should be the two pillars through which the position is to be respected.
Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, Agbazuere said that equity demands that Abia South which is now occupying the governorship through Ikpeazu should be allowed to continue for a second term like other former governors from other zones before him.
Agbazuere recalled that before now that Abia North through Orji Kalu took two terms and was followed by Senator Theodore Orji from Abia Central who also took two terms, “So it behoves on the people of the state to allow Ikpeazu to do what others from other zones did by taking his second term as governor”.
He said, “The state has three zones with Abia North serving two terms through Orji Kalu, Abia Central served two terms through Senator Orji, it is therefore equitable and most appropriate that Abia South should be allowed to serve their two terms”
The human rights lawyer noted that, “Governor Ikpeazu who is from Abia South senatorial zone has served only one term and given his performance index rating, he deserves a second term in office”.
Agbazuere explained that those who are contesting for the governorship position of Abia state and are not from Abia South senatorial zone, “Are being most unfair to equity, their conscience and to the people of the state”.
He said, “I know those involved are noble men and women and I urge them to take this advice seriously and wait for their turn, as governor Ikpeazu will win again come 2019 and it is worthless to waste their resources”.
The Abia governor’s aide recalls what use to happen after elections in the state where people who lost elections end up going to court where resources which should have been used to develop the state are wasted in various legal suits.
Agbazuere said, “Even if such amounts of money are private funds, they could be used to build industries that could employ our teeming youths which will in turn take them away from crimes and also help in the internally generated revenue for the state”
He went on to outline the achievements of the governor in various sectors of the state such as rural and urban road construction and rehabilitation, hospital upgrading, agricultural development, including the promotion of made in Aba products among others.
The lawyer said, “In the light of the above raised points, I therefore urge all the affected people to heed to this clarion call and save their resources by stepping down or shelving their ambition to sustain our unity”
