The Immediate Past Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Chief Dr. George Moghalu has emerged as the Labour Party governorship candidate for the upcoming November 8, 2025 Anambra State gubernatorial election following a free, fair, and credible primary election on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Awka, capital city of Anambra State.

Dr. Moghalu who polled a total of 575 votes to defeat his rival, Mr. John Nwosu, who got 19 votes in the exercise to become the Labour Party candidate and flag-bearer expressed his joy and gratitude to the party’s delegates for their support and rare opportunity

In his remarks shortly after being declared winner, Dr. Moghalu praised the conduct of the primaries, and pledged to lead a transformative campaign built on integrity, inclusion, and service to the people.

Moghalu who addressed the delegates before the voting process, acknowledged the significant challenge of facing incumbent Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, described the upcoming general election as a high-stakes contest.

“The election we are going into on November 8, is akin to a football match, which requires one to put forward the first eleven”

The former NIWA boss, further urged the delegates to make a strategic choice that would strengthen the Labour Party’s chances at the polls.

“You have to choose a candidate that you are going to use for the main election. Running an election against an incumbent is not a tea party—but it is doable. For us to do it, we must put the first foot forward. This is what I am pleading with you—put your confidence in me and I will not betray your confidence if you check my track records.”

In his acceptance speech, following his victory at the primary election, Moghalu assured both the delegates and the wider Anambra electorate that he remains committed to transparency and accountability in leadership. He outlined a mission centered on restoring public confidence and reversing the declining trajectory of governance in the state.

“We are going into this election determined to change the narrative. The trajectory today is such that Anambra State needs a rejig. Our security and basic infrastructure have all failed and something has to be done.”

Continuing, Dr. Moghalu acknowledged some efforts made by the current administration but stressed that there is much room for improvement:

“I must acknowledge that there are some areas they have done their best, but there is need for improvement because one can’t give what he does not have —and we will definitely deliver those improvements for the benefit of our people.”

Highlighting what he described as a critical void in Anambra politics, Moghalu stated:

“The most important and critical thing that has taken flight in the politics of Anambra is that the people have lost confidence in their government. Our mission is to restore the confidence of our people in their government—and that can only be possible by offering them good governance.”

“Restore your confidence in me and I will justify it and change the narrative.

“I appeal to you to trust me, cross check my political trajectory and you will see that I have never started a project I did not complete. I represent the light that will bring glory for the name of God Almighty and for the benefit of Ndi Anambra.”

Dr. Moghalu who is well known for his versatility in the private sector and expertise in public administration, emphasized on the essence of unity within the party, calling on his co-aspirant to work together toward a common goal.

“There is no victor and no vanquished. I urge my brother, Mr. John Nwosu and all his supporters to join hands with us to ensure Labour Party’s victory come November.”

“Anambra deserves a government that listens, innovates, and delivers. We will restore trust, empower our youth, secure our communities, and uplift every sector of our state.”

“The time is now. Anambra is ready. The Labour Party is ready. And I am ready.”
