In a strategic move to kickstart the Labour Party’s campaign for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has thrown his weight behind Olumide Akpata, the party’s gubernatorial candidate. Obi led Akpata on a courtesy visit to the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, to seek royal blessings ahead of the crucial election.

During the visit, Obi expressed gratitude to the Oba for his continuous fatherly guidance and emphasized the importance of free, fair, and credible elections for the nation’s progress. He stated, “With the prayers of the Oba, the party can make significant strides as we begin our political campaigns for the governorship election.”

Seeking Royal Endorsement

Olumide Akpata, accompanied by the national leadership of the Labour Party, underscored the importance of starting his campaign with the Oba’s blessings. He remarked, “I believe that your prayers, Your Majesty, will significantly aid us as we embark on this mission to rescue the state. The Labour Party is strong and vibrant, ready to wrestle power and deliver the dividends of democracy to the 18 local government areas of Edo State.”

Oba of Benin’s Response

In his response, the Oba of Benin welcomed his guests warmly and extended his best wishes for their campaign. He reiterated his apolitical stance, stating his openness to receive and pray for all candidates who seek his audience. However, he acknowledged the prominence of the Akpata name across the country.

Campaign Activities

Before visiting the palace, Peter Obi was received at the Labour Party’s state secretariat. The campaign activities included a road walk through major parts of Benin City and the inauguration of Akpata’s Campaign Office along Boundary Road in GRA.

The Labour Party’s efforts, spearheaded by Peter Obi’s support and the blessings from the Oba of Benin, mark a significant beginning for Akpata’s campaign, as the party looks to galvanize support across Edo State ahead of the September election.
