In a strategic move to kickstart the Labour Party’s campaign for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has thrown his weight behind Olumide Akpata, the party’s gubernatorial candidate. Olumide Akpata, accompanied by the national leadership of the Labour Party, underscored the importance of starting his campaign with the Oba’s blessings. He remarked, “I believe that your prayers, Your Majesty, will significantly aid us as we embark on this mission to rescue the state. The Labour Party is strong and vibrant, ready to wrestle power and deliver the dividends of democracy to the 18 local government areas of Edo State.”

Oba of Benin’s Response

In his response, the Oba of Benin welcomed his guests warmly and extended his best wishes for their campaign. He reiterated his apolitical stance, stating his openness to receive and pray for all candidates who seek his audience. However, he acknowledged the prominence of the Akpata name across the country.
