The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday as Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Samaila, in a formal letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, cited the unending internal crisis within the PDP as the main reason for his decision to dump the opposition party.

The letter was read during plenary on Tuesday, officially confirming the lawmaker’s switch to the ruling party.

With his defection, the number of PDP senators in the 10th National Assembly has now dropped from 28 to 27, further reducing the opposition’s strength in the upper legislative chamber.

The new composition of the Senate now stands as follows: APC – 74 senators; PDP – 27; Labour Party – 4; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 2; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1; and Social Democratic Party (SDP) – 1, bringing the total number to 109.

The development marks another major blow to the PDP, which has witnessed a wave of defections in recent weeks amid growing concerns over its internal leadership disputes and loss of political influence.
