Calm has returned to Ado Ekiti the Ekiti State capital and other parts of the state following the successful completion of the governorship election at the weekend. But one cannot forget the intrigues, fireworks and dusts raised just before the election especially the alleged mal-handling of the out-going Governor, Ayodele Fayose. The election last Saturday July 14 returned erstwhile Governor of the state and former Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. John Fayemi Kayode as Governor- elect . Though there were reported incidences of skirmishes here and there but according to report of local and international observers, the election was generally peaceful.
Although the election has come and gone with PDP crying foul over the outcome while the APC and its candidate, Dr. Fayemi are soaked in victory dance, many factors played roles in the election which many considered a battle of wits between Governor Fayose and President Buhari two people whose names were not on the ballot paper. Regardless. many considered the election as a proxy fight knowing that there is no love lost between Buhari and Fayose.
It also instructive to note that with the PDP losing the election which the outgoing Governor labored hard to win for his stoogeProf.Olushola Eleka, the comings weeks will be somewhat dramatic as Fayose who is s now in the cold would do everything possible to evade the Abuja hammer targeting his head since inception of the present administration of APC at the center.
Many also believe it is payback time for Fayose who has since the inauguration of the administration of President Buhari been pouring tirade to the person of the President, hurling personal insult at him, his family and in some cases wishing him death to the extent of paying for media coverage advertising the President’s obituary.
While Dr. Fayemi maintained a cool head and nursed his ambition quietly to regain his lost position, Gov Fayose was very vocal albeit wrongly which did not go down well with most elites and other concerned sons and daughters from Ekiti and resulting also in most of the them distancing themselves from his so-called stomach infrastructure politics.
Time will however tell what fate will befall Fayose in this vindictive political environment as many believe that he has questions to answer. Definitely in the coming months and years, Fayose will be fighting to stay out off EFCC radar.
However there are many game changer in this election. One was the massive deployment of security personnel which reduced the tendency to violence to the minimal and allowed voters to come out in their thousands to cast their votes. The second was the almost 100% effectiveness of the card reader which ensured there were no manual accreditations that would have created room for cheating. Yet there was also the masterstrokr from the Independent Electoral Commission which transmitted results from the polling units to the Zonal collation centres electronically. Ekiti voters also took ownership of the process by ensuring that they stayed at the Polling units after voting to ensure their votes counted.
Moresso, those who chose the APC candidate over that of PDP argued that voting for Weeks will be tantamount to giving Fayose third term in disguise. Many also believe that in supporting Eleka Fayose was fighting for his political life.
The purported looting of Ekiti treasury in the last four years under his watch fanned Fayos’s resolve to return his political stooge as Governor with obvious implications if Fayemi returned to power.
The APC desire was clearly seen in the composition of the strong 78-member National Campaign Committee set up by the APC to lead Fayemi‘s campaign in Ekiti State. The Committee which consists of almost all the APC Governors and who is who in the party was headed by the Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu.
In the build up to the election, the unguarded behavior of Gov. Ayodele Fayose gave rise to serious crisis within the PDP camp causing massive defections from the party to the APC camp. The defectors however helped to fortify the Fayemi’s camp, boosting his chances during the election.
There were also some major political actors in the PDP who had scores to settle with Fayose and decamped to APC and other parties. They include Prince Dayo Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Works, who was seen campaigning for Fayemi after he was schemed out of the gubernatorial ticket of the PDP.
The APC on the other hand did not waste time to become united after the rigorous issues that arose after its primaries as all the aspirants that contested against Fayemi in the party‘s gubernatorial primaries immediately stood behind him, thereby presenting a common front to confront and defeat a common political enemy. The likes of Senator Ayo Arise, Bamidele Opeyemi, Segun Oni, Senator Gbenga Aluko and Babafemi Ojudu all lined up behind Fayemi. The unity of purpose which has been forged in the APC provided the political force that was needed in the election and that gave them the victory. For Fayemi there is burden of expectations as he prepare to take his oath of office in the coming months.
