Alarmed by the violent conducts recently exhibited by the Majority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly, Hon Uchenna Okoro Kalu, some of his constituents have demanded a drug test on him.

Specifically, they have written to the Chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA) General Buba Marwa to order a comprehensive drug test on the legislator to ascertain his mental state

The lawmaker who represents Arochukwu state Constituency in the Abia Assembly recently attacked his colleague with a bottle of beer, resulting in a grievous injury on the victim.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia on Thursday, a group known as Arochukwu Democratic Alliance insisted that the recent violent brawl by Kalu was not a random outburst but part of a consistent pattern of behaviour.

According to the Chairman of the group, Mazi Nnamdi Okoronkwo, reports reaching them indicate that Hon Uchenna Okoro Kalu has been exhibiting behaviour inconsistent with his high office.

” His colleagues at the Assembly are trying to cover for him,but privately, they have expressed fear being in his company because of his erratic violent behaviour,” he alleged.

He said most of the constituents of Arochukwu have expressed similar fears over the months and now wanted to put to rest the allegation of substance abuse to rest through a drug test by NDLEA.

According to him, ” we have written to NDLEA to compel our representative to undergo this test so that we know the truth. We are no longer comfortable with the snide remarks by outsiders on his mental status. ”

Asked whether they were not intruding into the private life of the lawmaker, Okoronkwo disagreed, saying that as an elected public officer, Hon Uchenna Okoro Kalu is subject to public scrutiny.

” We sent him to the assembly and accountability and transparency demand that we be satisfied that he is mentally and physically sound to do the job. If not, we take action. ”

He said it was even in the overall interest of the lawmaker to undergo the drug test to finally lay to rest the allegation against him that his violent and unstable behaviour is linked to substance abuse.
