Finidi George has resigned as head coach of the Super Eagles, ending his short tenure after just two winless games. This decision follows a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic on matchday 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, leaving the Super Eagles without a single victory in their first four qualifying matches.

The news was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, who announced the resignation on his X account on Saturday, writing, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”

An inside source at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also verified the development, indicating that the federation is actively searching for a new manager. The source hinted that the NFF might consider reducing the head coach’s salary as part of their restructuring plans.

A Short-Lived Tenure

Finidi, 53, was appointed as the Super Eagles coach in May, following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro after the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Finidi’s brief stint saw him oversee the team for just two games, both of which ended in disappointment. His interim management included a doubleheader international friendly against Ghana and Mali in March, which also failed to yield positive results.

NFF’s Commitment to World Cup Qualification

In the wake of Finidi’s resignation, the president of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, has reiterated the federation’s commitment to ensuring Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Speaking on Thursday in Abuja after a meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, Gusau acknowledged the gravity of the current situation but expressed confidence in turning things around.

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football. We cannot run away from that. But all I want to assure is that we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the minister to see that we come out with holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward,” Gusau stated.

Looking Ahead

Despite the setbacks, Gusau remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances. He assured fans that the NFF is dedicated to devising effective strategies and taking substantial measures to secure World Cup qualification. “Don’t forget, it is still possible, and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the latter and Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup,” he asserted.

In response to the resignation, reactions have been mixed. While some fans and analysts believe Finidi was not the right man for the job, others have expressed disappointment and hope for better days ahead. The NFF’s next steps, including the appointment of a new coach and possible salary adjustments, will be closely watched as the Super Eagles aim to revive their World Cup campaign.
