In a thrilling Nigerian showcase, Alex Iwobi delivered a decisive blow deep into added time, securing Fulham’s remarkable 2-1 triumph over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Calvin Bassey, another Nigerian talent, initially gave Fulham the lead in the 65th minute, and Harry Maguire responded with a near-post effort, leveling the scores just a minute before the 90-minute mark. However, it was Iwobi, fresh from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), who silenced the home crowd with a goal seven minutes into added time.

Despite the completion of Jim Ratcliffe’s minority stake in United and a recent spell of good form, the Red Devils were dominated by Fulham for extended periods. The week had brought hope of a fresh start for United, who had won their previous four Premier League games, reigniting aspirations for Champions League qualification. However, the 2-1 defeat now leaves them eight points behind Villa.

While Ratcliffe expressed ambitions to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance within three years, Fulham’s performance exposed the challenges that lie ahead for the British billionaire both on and off the field. Rodrigo Muniz had come close to opening the scoring for Fulham in the first half, hitting the post.

Fulham seized the lead midway through the second half when Calvin Bassey netted his first goal for the team from a corner. United seemed to salvage a point against the run of play when Harry Maguire tapped in after Bernd Leno spilled Bruno Fernandes’ effort. However, Fulham had the last word as Adama Traore left Maguire trailing, setting up Iwobi to curl the ball inside Andre Onana’s near post and secure their first away win since the season’s opening day.
