Nwifuru urges Football Club’s commitment and focus.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has urged players of Abakaliki Football Club to remain focused, committed and determined to succeed.

Nwifuru gave the advice when players and management of the club paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday at his country home in Oferekpe, Izzi Local Government Area.

The governor urged sports officials and administrators to uphold professionalism and ethical behaviour both on and off the field.

He promised continued support for the club, adding that he would be more involved in its affairs.

Nwifuru admonished the team to re-strategise for the new football season in order to improve performance.

“I am pleased with your activities and I know you will do well. Remain focused and continue winning to make the club, the state and the country proud.

“I am committed to the club’s future, even if others will not lead,” Nwifuru said.

Abakaliki Football Club was reintroduced into Nigeria’s domestic football scene after the Ebonyi State Government acquired and rebranded Coal City Football Club, restoring a professional team to the state years after the defunct Ebonyi Angels ceased operations.

The move marked a renewed effort by the state to re-establish its presence in organised league football.

Since its reconstitution, the club has competed in Nigeria’s lower divisions, including the Nigeria National League, experiencing promotion and relegation in line with its rebuilding phase.

The team returned to national prominence during the 2025 President Federation Cup, where it recorded a surprise run to the final, drawing attention to its progress and potential.

State officials have described the club as a vehicle for grassroots talent development and youth engagement, with recent administrative efforts focused on stabilising operations, improving professionalism and strengthening competitiveness ahead of the new league season.
