Rwanda’s head coach, Thorsten Frank Splitter, is counting on insights from former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to strategize against Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup CAF Qualifying Group C fixture on March 17, 2025. The Rwandan team currently tops the group alongside South Africa, both with seven points, but Rwanda leads due to superior goal difference.

Splitter, a Belgian tactician, acknowledges the crucial role Rohr could play in Rwanda’s preparation. Rohr, who recently led Benin to a historic 2-1 victory over Nigeria, coached the Super Eagles for nearly six years and is well-acquainted with their strengths and weaknesses.

“I am very sure we (me and Gernot Rohr) will have a phone call before; it may be two or three, and if he can tell me something, I will be stupid not to take it. For that, we will try to be in contact; if possible, we can help each other; for sure, we will do it,” Splitter shared with Brila FM on Saturday.

Recent Victories and Challenges

Rohr’s strategic acumen was evident in Benin’s victory against Nigeria, where Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounié’s goals overturned Raphael Onyedika’s early lead for the Super Eagles. This win marked Benin’s first victory over Nigeria in the Ivory Coast, highlighting Rohr’s ability to exploit Nigeria’s vulnerabilities.

Currently, Nigeria is languishing in fifth place in the group with a mere three points from four matches. The Super Eagles are eager to revive their World Cup qualification hopes with upcoming fixtures, including a crucial home match against Zimbabwe on March 24, following their Rwanda trip.

Leadership Changes in Nigeria’s Coaching Staff

The Nigerian football scene has seen significant changes recently. Finidi George resigned as head coach on June 15, just after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced its decision to hire an expatriate technical adviser. This shift indicates the NFF’s intent to revitalize the team’s strategies and performance.

As the qualifiers progress, Rwanda’s reliance on Rohr’s expertise could be pivotal. Splitter’s collaboration with Rohr aims to secure Rwanda’s maiden World Cup qualification by adding another significant victory to their campaign. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s new coaching direction will be critical in overcoming their current challenges and reclaiming their spot as a top contender in African football.
