Prof. Ikonne

Following the February 4 fresh PDP governorship primaries, in Abia state, the party has disclosed reasons why it zoned the governorship position to Isiala Ngwa North LGA where the deceased candidate of the party, Prof. Uche Ikonne, hailed from.

Vice chairman and Acting State Publicity Secretary of the party, Elder Amah Abraham, who stated this while featuring in Umuahia, explained the party never wanted a situation where it will commence another process of reconciliation after the fresh primaries.

He assured that the party was united in the decision zoning the seat to Isiala Ngwa North council as there was no dissent from anybody during the meeting.

He said; “Initially, we did zone to two zones, but there was no need again. Whereas anybody has the right to go to Wadata plaza and pick up the expression of interest and nomination forms, but we wanted a situation whereby we don’t create a problem where after the fresh primaries, we will start a process of reconciliation again.  This is why the caucus felt that it was necessary to zone, not even to Umunneato bloc, but to micro zone to Isiala Ngwa North. And that’s what we have done. This decision has been welcomed by all and sundry. We had leaders of all the three senatorial zones, they were present. It is not a virtual meeting, it was a physical meeting.

“They were present and people made inputs. It is open and free for all.  And that decision has been welcome; we have been receiving calls from our members in Abia and diaspora commending the decision. Many had expected that people would start fighting at the meeting. And that the meeting will end without any decision.”

Amah further stated that the party never had the magnitude of attendance and constructive engagement, even before the emergence of the deceased candidate.

“So, the management of the party gives glory to God. Before the emergence of Prof. Ikonne, we didn’t have this level of engagement. We never had a caucus meeting with this magnitude of attendance and constructive engagement of members. What we had yesterday was all encompassing. What we had yesterday was a communion of a kind involving all the leaders of our party in the 17 local government areas who are members of the state caucus and the decision went down with everybody.

“Let me inform you that when the vote was taken, there was no single dissent. Everybody stood for the decision. I assure you that when the vote was taken to zone it to Isiala Ngwa North, there was no single dissent. Everybody in Abia State PDP caucus agreed that was the right decision.”
