In the early hours of Friday, soldiers from the Nigerian Army 3 Battalion in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, arrested Mr. Dele Fasan, the South-South Bureau Chief of Galaxy Television. Fasan was apprehended for recording video clips during a planned labor protest in the metropolis.

Additionally, human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe was taken into custody by the soldiers and escorted to a nearby military barracks following a mild rift between him and fellow activists, including Kelvin Ejumudo.

Despite the initial plans, the anticipated protest in the Delta metropolis was cancelled after critical stakeholders met and discussed the issues on Thursday night.

The incident involving the television journalist unfolded at the popular DSC roundabout in Effurun, where witnesses reported that soldiers allegedly brutalized and struck Fasan with the butt of their guns. Fasan was picked up in the presence of a police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola.

However, Fasan was released after the intervention of the police boss and colleagues who appealed to the Army Commander, Major AE Ohegbe. The Army Commander ordered Fasan’s release and the removal of handcuffs.

Speaking to reporters after his release, Fasan stated that he was attempting to capture video clips of the protest scene when overzealous soldiers confronted him. He commended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, DCP Aina Adesola, for promptly intervening in the matter.

National Secretary of Human Rights Protection Congress, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, voiced concerns about protests, citing potential property and financial losses. He urged urgent attention to address hunger in the country, emphasizing the need for employment opportunities and functional refineries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, DCP Aina Adesola, explained that he was sent to the scene by the Commissioner of Police to maintain peace.
