The Vice-Chancellor of Coal City University, Prof. Afam Icha Ituma, has called for strengthened collaboration among government, industry, and academic institutions to improve Nigeria’s education sector.
He made the call on Tuesday at the university’s 4th Public Lecture entitled Repositioning Nigeria’s Education Sector: Private Sector Partnership for National Growth and Global Competitiveness, held at the university auditorium in Enugu.
Prof. Ituma said coordinated efforts among stakeholders were necessary to address challenges affecting the sector. He commended ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and several State Governments aimed at repositioning the education sector through policy reforms, infrastructure development, and innovation-driven interventions. He noted that these efforts reflect a growing national commitment to improving access, quality, and relevance in education.
He particularly acknowledged the developmental strides of the Enugu State Government in education, citing the Enugu State Smart School Initiative as a notable example of technology-driven transformation in learning delivery. He added that similar initiatives across other states demonstrate a shared resolve to modernise the education system nationwide.
Prof. Ituma added that while public sector actions provide a foundation for reform, sustained progress would require broader participation from non-state actors to enhance access, infrastructure, research capacity, and quality assurance.
He further stressed that closer engagement between academic institutions and industry would support the development of skills aligned with labour market needs.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the commitment of Coal City University to academic development, innovation, entrepreneurship, and partnership-driven growth.
The event was chaired by Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Vice-Chancellor, University on the Niger, and former Minister of Power, who also delivered remarks on strengthening collaboration within Nigeria’s higher education system. Other dignitaries at the event included Prof. I. U. Kalu, Vice-Chancellor, Evangel University; Prof. Uche Vasser; Chief Ben Etiaba; Prof. Joe Ukemenam; and other education stakeholders.
The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Felicia Moh and focused on strategies for strengthening the education sector through collaboration and innovation. A keynote address was delivered by HE Mr. Peter Obi. The event provided a platform for diverse perspectives on strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
Prof. Ituma described education as central to national development and called for sustained cooperation among stakeholders to improve outcomes across all levels of the system.
