Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been recognised with a Commonwealth award for the Best Friendly Administrator to the nursing profession in Nigeria.
The recognition, the awarding institution noted, stemmed from the Governor’s strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure, working conditions and the wellbeing of health sector personnel.
Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Federation presented the award to the Governor during its conference in Abuja, with the body praising Sanwo-Olu’s “visionary leadership” in bolstering healthcare delivery in Lagos through the administration’s THEMES+ Agenda.
The nursing body said Lagos had continued to set the pace in healthcare, particularly in attending to the welfare and advancement of nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Chairman of Lagos Council of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Mrs. Christianah Adeboboye, on Thursday in Alausa, the seat of the State Government, presented the award to the Governor.
She said the Sanwo-Olu administration had demonstrated genuine concern for the wellbeing of health workers through consistent investments in healthcare infrastructure, which, she said, was complemented with prompt payment and insurance protection.
She said: “The presentation of an Award of Excellence to Governor Sanwo-Olu as the Best Nurses-Friendly Governor is a testament to your administration’s unwavering commitment to the healthcare sector, particularly to the welfare of Nurses and the advancement of the profession in Lagos State.
“As healthcare workers, we are faced with a lot of challenges that border on our welfare, including accommodations and pressure arising from shortages of nurses. But with the consistent actions that have been taken by the Sanwo-Olu government in the sector, we have seen improvements that have given us reassurance of our welfare and the future of our profession.
“This administration has demonstrated genuine concern for the wellbeing of health workers through strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure, improved working conditions, prompt payment of salaries, employment of healthcare personnel, and continuous support for health institutions across the State.”
The Commonwealth nurses appreciated the Governor’s efforts in promoting quality healthcare services, while recognising the critical role nurses and midwives played in achieving a healthier Lagos.
“These supports have strengthened the morale of healthcare workers and inspired greater dedication to service delivery,” Adeboboye said.
