…As 68 Personnel Faces Trial

The General Officer Commander, 8 Division, Sokoto, Major General Uwem Bassey has inaugurated a new president and members of Court-Martial for the division.
Speaking while inaugurating the 10 members panel at Tukur-Buratai auditorium, Gingiya Barracks Sokoto, he said the exigency of promotion or transfer is the reason behind the inauguration of new court martial in the division.
He explained that the division had earlier inaugurated two special Court martial whom have concluded and submitted their assignments before before being transferred, hence the reason behind the new one being inaugurated.
He called on members of the panel, led by Col. Clement Iyere, to ensure justice is served on the accused according to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The army Chief further called on members of the panel to always remembered that the accused are still members of the army and therefore should be treated as comerades .
He assured the accused persons that the court martial will be guided to ensure that the principles of law in accordance with the Constitution will be upheld.
Major General Uwem Bassey however advised both the prosecuting and defence counsel not to apply for unnecessary adjournment so as to deliver the case before it accordingly, saying Justice delayed is justice denied.
Meanwhile, not less than 68 Personnel including officers and soldiers were expected to face the newly inaugurated Court-Martial in the division.
Speaking in his remarks, the head of the defense counsel, Barrister Godwin Uwadiae, called on the president of the court to ensure rule of law is observed.
He called for administrative bails of the accused, where the accused will be posted instead of detaining them especially those whose case are not related with death penalty.
