Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and its environs welcomed the first rain this year with excitements.

The long awaited rain started around 2am and continued till around 4am on Saturday.

The excited residents said the rain came at a time it was most needed even though it was late in coming. Some residents were observed getting set for farming.

The residents had lamented the high temperatures over the past two months, which caused unbearable heat in the city. Children and infants were most affected by the unusual heat due to late rains. Between January and February, temperatures in Abuja were around 27C and 31öC, with sunny weather.

Welcoming the first rain as a relief, some residents said the hot weather was biting and made sleep difficult. A resident said he sweated every night because of the hot weather.

Also, they said the heat was made worse by worsening electricity in FCT. It was gathered that the nation’s capital and its environs have been throwing into darkness over the past eight weeks. Consequently, residents have been experiencing added woes.

However, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said the problem would be over soon.

Experts had predicted late rains in 2022 across the country and warned on the impact on food shortage, hunger and diseases outbreak.
