Following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber to assume interim duties. This decision comes in line with Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution.
“In accordance with Article 131 of the constitution, Mokhber is in charge of leading the executive branch,” stated Khamenei. Mokhber is tasked with collaborating with the heads of the legislative and judicial branches to organize presidential elections within a maximum period of 50 days.
President Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials, died in a helicopter crash in a mountainous region on Monday. The helicopter had gone missing on Sunday afternoon, leading to extensive search efforts. Early Monday, rescue teams located the wreckage and confirmed the deaths.
State television mourned Raisi’s passing, declaring, “The servant of the Iranian nation, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, has achieved the highest level of martyrdom whilst serving the people.” The broadcast included photos of Raisi accompanied by Quranic recitations, with the Mehr news agency also confirming his death.
In the wake of this national tragedy, Ayatollah Khamenei announced five days of public mourning. “I announce five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear people of Iran,” Khamenei said in an official statement, emphasizing the profound loss felt across the nation.
Iran’s Vice President for Executive Affairs, Mohsen Mansouri, also expressed his condolences by posting a Quranic verse on social media.
As the country grapples with the sudden loss of its president, Mokhber’s interim leadership will be crucial in maintaining stability and ensuring a smooth transition leading up to the elections.
