In a tragic incident, two people were killed and one injured in an attack by gunmen on Friday night in the Kparenke community, Miango District, Irigwe Chiefdom, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Victims Identified The victims of the attack are:

  • Friday Mangwa, 28 years old
  • Deborah Monday, 40 years old
  • Keziah Friday, 20 years old, who is currently receiving medical treatment for severe injuries at an undisclosed hospital.

Details of the Incident The attack occurred around 10 p.m. as residents were retiring for the night. The gunmen launched their assault on the innocent community members, resulting in the tragic deaths and injury. Neither DSP Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, nor Major Samson Zhakom of Operation Safe Haven, could be reached for comments at the time of reporting.

Community Response Sam Jugo, the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He condemned the violence, describing it as an act of terror unleashed by “citizens of the dark world” on law-abiding people.

Statement from IDA Jugo stated, “This news is despicable as it is unfortunate. The Rigwe Traditional Council, President and EXCO members of the Irigwe Development Association, and indeed the entire Rigwe nation, condemn this act of wanton disregard for human lives and extant laws of nature, and our country.”

He called for calm and restraint, urging the community to seek redress and justice through civilized and conventional approaches. “We cannot afford to retrogress into the days of bloodletting. The Rigwe nation believes in the sanctity of life. We are one of the most peaceful, law-abiding proponents of peaceful co-existence, and therefore we should be seen promoting this come rain or shine,” he added.

Appeal for Peace Jugo consoled the bereaved families, expressing solidarity during this period of mourning. He emphasized the need to uphold values that promote peaceful cohabitation and reject those that lead to anarchy and human suffering.

This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to protect communities and prevent further violence.
