APC Group flags Yari’s alleged opposition meeting, questions loyalty

A pro-APC group, the APC National Unity Support Group, has raised concerns over reports that Senator Abdul’aziz Yari held a private meeting with opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja, the group’s Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Haruna Sadauki, described the reported meeting as “troubling,” warning that it could undermine party unity at a critical political moment.
“At a time when the party is working to strengthen cohesion and consolidate its gains, any alleged secret engagement with opposition figures is deeply concerning,” Sadauki said.
The group cautioned the Zamfara senator and other party members against actions capable of weakening the ruling party, stressing that such moves could erode trust and create internal divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It added that the reported meeting, if true, could distract from the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which it said is focused on national development and unity.
“The administration of President Tinubu is committed to building a stronger and more united Nigeria. Any action that appears to deviate from this shared objective risks sending the wrong message to Nigerians,” the statement noted.
While acknowledging Yari’s stature as a founding member of the APC and a key political figure, the group said the development has raised fresh questions about his loyalty and commitment to the party.
“Though Senator Yari remains a respected leader within the APC, this development—if confirmed—raises legitimate concerns about alignment with the party’s goals,” Sadauki added.
The group also warned that engagement with opposition leaders, particularly those critical of the current administration, should be handled with caution, noting that such interactions could carry political consequences.
The development comes amid increasing political consultations and behind-the-scenes alignments as politicians begin early positioning for the 2027 elections. Opposition figures, including Atiku, have been linked to ongoing coalition-building efforts aimed at challenging the APC.
Within the ruling party, internal rivalries and shifting alliances have also heightened sensitivity around loyalty and discipline, especially among influential figures like Yari, who commands significant political weight in the North-West.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Yari or his associates regarding the alleged meeting.
The APC National Unity Support Group urged the senator to remain focused on party interests and demonstrate renewed commitment to the administration.
“The growing goodwill enjoyed by the President must not be jeopardised by actions that appear self-serving or capable of weakening party unity,” the group stated.
