All Progressives Congress (APC) delegates from the Twenty-Seven (27) Local Governments area of Imo State have elected new members of the State Executive Committee of the Party.
The exercise took place at the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC) Owerri, saw the emergence of Mr. Dan Nwafor and Hon. Ireagwu Obioma as Chairman and Secretary of the State Chapter of APC respectively with thirty-four (34) other members of the State Working Committee (SWC) and were immediately sworn in.
The state governor, Rochas Okorocha in his speech at the event said that what has happened in the state has made it to be a case study, where people who were not part of the party from the beginning are now trying to make it their personal property.
Okorocha said, “Imo APC has become a Case-Study, when we brought this party, the opponents gave us all sorts of names but we remained steadfast, but today some of those who gave us such derogatory names have finally came into the Party, with the aim to scatter it”.
He Continued “Last time when the Congresses were about to take place, they stole the materials meant for the exercise, which made the Congresses not hold again and Nigerians saw there was no Congress in Imo and both the Court, INEC, Security agencies, and others said there was no Congress”.
“In the face of all these faultless facts, the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great Party led by a very decent man Comrade Adams Oshiomhole directed that the aborted Congresses should now be held in Imo. We had had the Ward and Local Government Congresses and we are here today for the State Congress”.
The governor said, “We want to commend our National Chairman and members of our National Working Committee for ensuring that internal democracy in our party is upheld”.
“We are very proud of being members of the APC for this singular act and Mr Chairman of Congress Committee, you can see since your arrival that the State is very peaceful, which goes a long way to tell you the story that this party is united in Imo State”.
“And I want to appeal to you all members of our party, especially those in Abuja to disregard some statements on the social media and comments of few individuals who for reasons best known to them and knowing too well that they have no relationship with the masses of Imo State have preferred to stay in Abuja and cook up stories that tend to discredit our party in the State”.
He continued, “I assure you that we are all firm believer in Buharism and we are here, determined to support President Buhari for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2019″.
“To our delegates, you must know that there is no failure in politics, for those of you who may not have succeeded today in this contest, you must see your failure as an invitation to start again. APC in Imo State is united and will continue to win”.
The Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Barr. Oyo in his remarks said that what they had observed since they arrived for the Congresses was a complete departure from the picture being painted by some people about Imo APC, stating that they had seen one large happy family of Imo APC.
His said, “We have not also received any complaint about the Ward and Local Government Congresses meaning that the exercises went well in line with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution. Imo is the heartbeat of APC in the South-East. And with what we have seen too, APC will not only retain Imo but will win in other States of the South-East”.
