The 11 man Executive of the Umuahia North Chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers have been inaugurated to pilot the affairs of the union for another four years.
Speaking after the free and fair election, the new chairman of the union Nwosu Udo Okechi who was returned unopposed thanked God and his supporters for making it possible for him to emerge as the number one (1) member of Umuahia North NUT. Comrade Nwosu who was the immediate past Secretary of the union, commended the High Chief Jerry Onyemachi led administration for doing well in office, said “with the wealth of experience he has gathered, the union would go to a higher height”.
While appealing for the support of all members to enable his Exco deliver on their campaign promises, he warned that the union was not prepared to fight the government in getting the right of members.
“I want to make it clear with humility that the incoming Exco members will not fight the government of the day no matter your political interest. Always engage our employers with constructive dialogue on issues concerning teachers’ welfare no matter the circumstance”.
In his fare well speech, the immediate past chairman of the union High Chief Comrade Jerry Onyemachi congratulated the Comrade Nwosu led Executive and wish them well in their tenure.
Onyemachi, who is the Principal of Government College Umuahia, said his administration made remarkable progress especially in the area of addressing matters that concerned teachers that were transferred unjustly.
“I want to tell you that my administration, the state chapter in collaboration with NUT National has engaged the Abia State Government in a dialogue to ensure that salary and other emoluments of teachers like the TSS was paid. Dialogue is the only powerful instrument union uses to realize her demand from our employers”.
“I have the promise of the government that the TSS would be paid to the teachers under the watch of the local government and chieftaincy affairs ministry commissioner Rt. Hon. Christopher Enweremadu”.
He advised teachers to do their work in accordance to the set rules as the union cannot intervene to save anybody who will be punished for not doing his job.
