The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund, on Friday commemorated the 2026 International Day of Play with a colourful event at Yahaya Abdulkarim Model Primary School, Sokoto.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Sanusi Binji, said the celebration highlighted the importance of play as a fundamental right of every child and a vital tool for learning, creativity, and healthy development.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing safe and inclusive learning environments where children can grow, learn, and realise their full potential.

UNICEF representative, Beatrice Sababa, called for stronger collaboration among government, development partners, and communities to improve education delivery and child development outcomes in the state.

According to her, play enhances children’s creativity, social skills, physical and mental well-being, while strengthening relationships within communities.

She urged stakeholders to invest in supportive parenting programmes, early childhood learning opportunities, and safe recreational spaces that enable children to thrive.

The event brought together education stakeholders, government officials, teachers, development partners, and pupils, who underscored the role of play in fostering learning, inclusion, and overall child development.

Activities featured cultural performances, games, music, dance, and interactive sessions aimed at promoting teamwork, creativity, and active participation among pupils.

The celebration reaffirmed the commitment of SUBEB, the EU, and UNICEF to advancing child-friendly learning environments and protecting the rights and welfare of children in Sokoto State.
