The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (Rtd), has condemned the death of former Nigerian Army spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe, while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a national tragedy and a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen efforts against insecurity.
Maj. Gen. Rabe reportedly died on Saturday after spending nearly two weeks in captivity following his abduction alongside his wife while travelling to Katsina State.
Reacting to the development, Col. Usman expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the retired senior military officer, noting that the late general dedicated much of his life to serving Nigeria and safeguarding its territorial integrity.
“The death of Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe is a painful and heartbreaking loss, not only to his family and the Nigerian Army but to the entire nation,” Usman said.
“The circumstances surrounding his death are unacceptable and highlight the urgent need to intensify the fight against banditry and other violent crimes.”
According to him, the incident underscores the growing threat posed by criminal elements across the country and should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in addressing insecurity.
“This tragic development should further strengthen our collective resolve to defeat banditry, kidnapping and all forms of criminality threatening the peace and stability of our communities,” he stated.
The security adviser also expressed concern over the continued captivity of the late general’s wife, who remains in the hands of the abductors.
“We are deeply concerned about the safety of his wife, who was abducted alongside him. Security agencies and all relevant authorities must do everything possible to ensure her immediate and safe rescue,” he said.
Usman called on governments at all levels to intensify efforts toward securing the release of all Nigerians currently being held captive by criminal groups.
“No family should have to endure the pain, uncertainty and trauma associated with the abduction of a loved one. Every effort must be made to bring those still in captivity back home safely,” he added.
He further urged security agencies to redouble their efforts in tracking down those responsible for the crime and ensuring they face justice.
“The perpetrators of this heinous act must be identified, apprehended and prosecuted. We must send a clear message that criminality will not be tolerated,” he said.
The retired colonel also called on communities to support security operations through vigilance and timely intelligence sharing.
Extending condolences to the bereaved family, the Nigerian Army, associates of the late general and the nation at large, Usman prayed for the repose of Maj. Gen. Rabe’s soul.
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe Aljannah Firdaus and gives his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss. We also pray for the safe return of his wife and all other victims currently in captivity,” he said.
