Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State caused a stir today with an unexpected visit to the State Assembly residential quarters on Aba Road. This visit occurred against a backdrop of mounting pressure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and local government areas urging the State House of Assembly to impeach the governor.

Amid fears that impeachment proceedings against the governor might be imminent, Governor Fubara’s visit added to the political tension gripping the state. Although four members of the State House of Assembly, loyal to Fubara, had recently elected Victor Oko Jumbo as the new Speaker after the resignation of Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, the situation remained precarious.

During his brief stopover at the assembly residential quarters, Governor Fubara did not engage with anyone but rather took a stroll around the facility before proceeding to monitor an ongoing project around Obiri-Ikwerre.

Reports had earlier circulated that the state government intended to commence the renovation of the state assembly complex, sparking panic among lawmakers aligned with Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. While the purpose of the governor’s visit to the assembly facility remains unconfirmed, a source in the state government House suggested that the governor’s aim might be to initiate the renovation of the facility for a much-needed facelift.
